Avery Nagy-MacArthur

Nova Scotia Shorebird Programs Biologist

My lifelong interest in birds began as a young child watching vibrant grosbeaks and finches from the window at my parent’s feeder in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in New York. A move to the Maritimes in my childhood precipitated an obsession with shorebirds, and in 2008 I started volunteering with Birds Canada as a Piping Plover monitor on the south shore of Nova Scotia, which sparked my interest in pursuing a career in ornithology. During my BSc in Biology, I completed an honours project on migratory Whimbrel at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB., and am currently completing a master’s thesis on the foraging ecology of breeding Arctic and Common terns. I am thrilled to be back at Birds Canada and to get to work with a team of dedicated and talented colleagues on community science and conservation. Outside of work, I enjoy birding by ear, cooking, backpacking, canoeing, gardening and playing the fiddle.
