Youth Training

Young Ornithologists' Workshop (YOW)

The dates of the 2019 Doug Tarry Young Ornithologist Workshop will be August 3 to 11, 2019.

Since the creation of the Doug Tarry Young Ornithologists' Workshop in the mid-1970s, it has been the jumping-off point for many of Canada's best and brightest scientists, field biologists, and naturalists. Thanks to the keen foresight and generosity of humanitarian and naturalist Doug Tarry, the workshop is offered free to selected applicants. The program has trained over 150 young people since 1991.

Participants experience nature and ornithology firsthand in a research-oriented setting. Bird banding and migration monitoring are the main focus, but 'YOWs' enjoy a wide range of hands-on natural history and scientific activities. Space is limited. The workshop annually supports six teens from across Canada, ranging in age from 13-17 years old.

The Award covers all direct costs of the workshop (accommodation, meals, travel while at Long Point, and professional instruction). Recipients are responsible for their transportation to Long Point.

Young Ornithologists' Internship

Month-long student internships are awarded to mature teenagers with clearly demonstrated interests in field ornithology. Interns are often YOW graduates. Each August-September, one or more interns spend three to four weeks at LPBO, assisting with all aspects of LPBO's Migration Monitoring Program to further develop their skills. With the help of LPBO staff, interns design and conduct an independent field research project.

Prospective participants of the workshop or the internship should download the application form or email the Long Point Bird Observatory Program Coordinator at

Applications are due by April 30.
