A Triumph for Waterfowl
Years ago, waterfowl like the Wood Duck faced serious challenges. Habitat loss and other threats put these beautiful birds at risk.
But thanks to decades of conservation efforts, collaboration, and critical data from initiatives like the Breeding Bird Survey, their populations have made an incredible comeback—growing by 46% since the 1970s.
The Wood Duck story is one of hope and proof that we can make a difference when we act to protect nature.
Birds That Still Need Our Help
Unfortunately, not all birds are faring as well. According to the State of Canada’s Birds, Aerial Insectivores like Swifts and Swallows have experienced devastating declines—down 43% since the 1970s. Bank Swallows alone have plummeted by more than 90%.
These birds are in a critical situation, facing significant threats like habitat destruction and pesticide use. Without urgent action, we risk losing these vital species forever. It’s up to us to make a difference.
